I love ideas. And when I heard this one, even me as an idea lover, thought it was a little far out there: a deer hotel. Really?! Vicky, my mom’s friend, loves watching deer. She wanted to give something back to them. She proposed a deer hotel outside her window. Deer would have a little shelter and water, a little nutrient dense food, high fat for winter possibly, and a mineral lick for health. This idea started to make a lot more sense.
I took a 4 day organic landscaping course last winter through NOFA. When it came to tick prevention the instructor not so subtly leaned toward setting up deer gates throughout our forests to spray the deer with Frontline (Not exactly an organic approach!) His justification was we are helpless to the onslaught of lyme. This idea reeked of George Orwell’s 1984 and surveillance check points for deer is not high on my idea list. BTW, Fipronil, the main ingredient in Frontline, is toxic to all insects, fish, birds, rabbits and on and on. It causes colony collapse disorder in bees. And Fipronil was thought that because it was based on insect biochemistry that it would be safe for everyone else. It turns out the chemical Fipronil breaks down into is even more harmful and broadly effecting chemical than the original. It ages like a fine wine… but I digress.
Therefore, if lyme disease, like all disease is a sign of imbalance or some profoundly spiritual lesson we have to learn then a deer hotel is making a lot more sense. Spiritual lessons come and we don’t have much say as to where or when. Imbalances we can manage better balance for. I am for being proactive. A lyme spirokete doesn’t effect all of us the same way. In fact, many people can get bit by a lyme carrying tick and not get sick. Lyme effects the old, young, and physiological weaker more than anyone else. When we see Lyme becoming epidemic in “healthy” people maybe it is time we question if we are healthy. Lyme has been around for thousands and thousands of years. Not too long ago a caveman was unfrozen and tested positive for lyme. Lyme is a vector disease. It can’t just exist in the dirt. It needs a living-breathing host. There has never been a time when it just wiped out its host species because if it did it too would be wiped out! That is pretty impressive. Basically, like life, lyme is what we make of it. It could be a plague we need to spend millions on equipping our forests with Frontline spray checkpoints or it could be a message we, and all lyme carrying hosts, could be healthier and maybe we need deer hotels?! I’d even go one step further: We need deer spas, and not just species specific spas; we need more spas in general. We need places for people or deer to get their energy back up!
The most far out there theory on why we have lyme and the new electrical sensitivity illnesses is because we have a trashed energy system. We stay up late, we are around radiation from cell phones, towers, wifi, smart meters, microwaves, we are around electrical and magnetic fields of all kinds while driving or flying, rarely are we grounded, we don’t get enough sun, and we all know our food and cardboard cutouts of food are nutritional similar. This begs the question, then why are deer not perfectly healthy? One, to some extent they are in our poorly managed environment whether they like it or not and two, the environment was never broadly perfect enough to not have had lyme since the caveman! That is not to say we should settle for struggle and illness because our environment allows it. As we begin to understand the conditions that lead to better health, more beautiful people, deer and all life then we can make more of that which supports life. (Hint: Water, air, soil, magnetism?!) The knowledge is already out there. We aren’t in the age of reason. We are in the information age. It is our job to sort through all of it and find out what makes sense. And from what I can tell a deer hotel (or deer spa) makes the most sense for treating lyme, loving our wildlife and ourselves.
